Compared to pre-pandemic levels (2018–19), high-volume famous attractions experienced a significant drop in visitor traffic for the years 2021/22.
Even though day hikes and short walks were still common, activity has drastically decreased from levels prior to COVID. At numerous pre-COVID large volume locations in the South Island, this effect was particularly noticeable.
While many New Zealanders stated that they typically visit protected areas at least once a year, some New Zealanders stated that they do not.
Over the year of 2021–2022, 80% of survey participants said they often visit a protected natural area at least once a year. A Protected Heritage Place was regularly visited by 75% of respondents at least once in the previous year.
Over the course of 2021–2022, 83% of New Zealanders who visited a Protected Natural Area said their most recent trip there was good or extraordinary.
