Golden Week is the most anticipated holiday week in Japan. It is a national festival with most workplaces and schools closing and a significant rise in domestic travel. However, as a result of the epidemic, tourism during Golden Week in 2020 and 2021 significantly declined. Golden Week 2022 displayed encouraging signs of recovery with limitations being gradually lifted and Covid cases continuing at a low level.
Japan appears to be recovering after two seasons of exceptionally low domestic travel during important festivals and vacation times. Golden Week 2022 (29 April to 5 May) showed a 19% increase in daily visitors to tourist destinations in Japan compared to the previous week.
