The population of the world has doubled since 1973. Of course, that expansion has not been evenly distributed, and the list of the nations with the largest populations is still changing. Visual Capitalist examined which nations account for the largest portion of the eight billion people on the earth using the most recent data from the United Nations.
There were just six nations with populations of more than 100 million people fifty years ago. Today, 15 nations have achieved such status, with Vietnam about to become the 16th.
India will certainly hold the title as the largest nation in the world whenever it surpasses China. Population of India will be peaking in the 2060s unless there are substantial changes in projected growth rates. Around 1.7 billion people will be living in India at its most populous point. Around the year 2080, the population of the planet is predicted to reach its peak. The estimated peak human population is 10.5 billion.
